Hans Eugen Frischknecht


Hans Eugen Frischknecht was born in St. Gallen. Following his "Matura" studies and training for his piano teacher's diploma at the Swiss Music Teaching Association, he studied from 1959 until 1962 at the Berlin School of Music under Michael Schneider (organ), Boris Blacher (composition), Josef Rufer (12-tone music) and Ernst Pepping (counterpoint). He passed his final exams for the organ in 1962. From 1962 until 1964 he studied in Paris under Olivier Messiaen (analysis class at the National Conservatory, Premier Prix 1964), Gaston Litaize (organ) and Robert Veyron-Lacroix (harpsichord). He obtained a theory teacher's diploma from Bern Conservatory in 1969 (Theo Hirsbrunner, J.E. Dähler). He has given concerts in several European and American countries. In 1971 he won the first prize at the Organ Improvisation Competition in St. Albans (England). Since 1964 he works in Bern as an organist and choir director of the 'Johanneskirche'. Since 1983 he teaches theory and improvisation at the Biel Conservatory. In 1970 he founded the ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) Vocal Soloists of Bern. He has experimented in new music with teenagers, given radio broadcasts and written articles for various periodicals. From 1977 until 1988 he was president of the ISCM section in Bern, from 1978 until 1990 president of the Bern section of the Swiss Music Pedagogic Association (SMPV), and for several years he was president of the SMPV's Presidents' Conference.
