Hanspeter Kyburz was born the son of Swiss parents in Lagos/Nigeria. His studies in composition initially began in Graz under the tutelage of A. Dobrowolsky and Gösta Neuwirth, from 1982 to 1990 under Gösta Neuwirth and Frank Michael Beyer at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and finally under Hans Zender in Frankfurt. He received the Boris Blacher Prize in 1990, received the Cité Internationale des Arts scholarship in Paris in 1990/91 and began his collaboration with the Insel-Musik-Konzerten in Berlin. Hanspeter Kyburz graduated from his studies in musicology, philosophy and art history with an MA in 1991. In 1994 he was awarded the Schneider Schott Prize and the sponsorship prize awarded by Akademie der Künste Berlin. Hanspeter Kyburz has lectured at various electronic studios in Germany, Austria and Switzerland; in 1996 he was invited to collaborate as the guest lecturer within the framework of the Basler Komponistenwoche. He has become renowned by the performance of his compositions at such festivals as the Berliner Biennale, the Wiener Festwochen, the Wittener Tagen für Neue Kammermusik and in Donaueschingen. His works have been performed by internationally acclaimed ensembles such as the Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Contrechamps Geneva, Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris, Musikfabrik Nordrhein Westfalen, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble für Neue Musik Zürich, Ensemble UnitedBerlin, Camerata Quartet Warsaw and the ensemble recherche Freiburg. CD recordings document his work. Hanspeter Kyburz has written works for the Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris. He has received further commissions from Südwestfunk Baden-Baden, Basel Conservatory and Steirischen Herbst, the Schleswig-Holstein-Festival, the Sender Freies Berlin and Süddeutschen Rundfunk. Hanspeter Kyburz has been the professor for composition at the 'Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler"' in Berlin since 1997.
