Fortunat Frölich

Fortunat Frölich studied violoncello and voice at the Zurich, Nepal and Leipzig schools of music. Before devoting himself to composition he was occupied extensively with orchestral conducting, pageants and psychology. Frölich is engaged neither in a particular school nor a particular style. He develops his compositional concepts according to textual aspects. He is using an extremely broad palette of musical and stylistic means in reference to his development as a musician; this has guided him through various musical styles and cultures. Confrontations between opposites are to be found frequently in his works, for example in his concert for improvised free-jazz saxophone and orchestra (CD Letter to Art Pepper, Musikszene Schweiz MGB 9603) or in his intercultural encounters project 'Leh ya dschare', which has been recognised by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Culture and the Swiss Music Council as a distinguished piece. Frölich has received commissions for his compositions from the Swiss Federal Agency for Culture, BAK, expo 02, the Biel / Solothurn opera house, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Graubünden Chamber Orchestra, Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Swiss culture foundation 'Pro Helvetia'.
